So this was a bit of a test shoot for an environmental portrait I would like to do. The series will consist of two components. The first will be fairly traditional environmental portraits like this one. And the second will be an extension of this. For example, Tanya in the photo here is a textile artist, so the second image would be of her probably shot in the studio with a fairly white bground and I will shoot a knitting needle and enlarge it so it is bigger than her. I will probably have some wool coming from the needle and either becoming part of the background or part of her clothes. I will also be shooting this environmental portrait earlier in the day, as there is lovely sunlight that comes through the windows above. Any suggestions?? Do you guys think the concept works? I really want to extend on the idea of the usual environmental portrait, but still incorporate it somehow.

I think this is a great concept! I love the idea of combining the two portraits - I think this subject will look particularly good in the second surreal style as the material (holder/knob?) in the foreground of the shot looks out of proportion as it is. I think with the over-sized knitting needle, if executed well, will be really quirky and clever! I understand this is a test, but one thing to look out for in the real portrait is the subject's expression - she looks a little confused or disinterested here. I'll look forward to seeing the work progress!
I like this, but be careful not to loose the sitter in the environment, experiment with DOF a little more, or maybe some lighting on the sitter. I like the light in foreground, how lines up with her head. Cara's point about the sitters expression is so important....the face, the eyes tell it all
